Origins And Symbolism

The Czech Republic's Flag: A National Emblem with a Rich History

Origins and Symbolism

The flag of the Czech Republic, known as the Czech Státní vlajka České republiky, is the same as the flag of the former Czechoslovakia. It consists of two horizontal stripes, with white on top and red on the bottom, and a blue triangle extending from the left side. The flag's proportions are 2:3, and it has a long and storied history.

Historical Evolution

The flag of the Czech Republic has evolved over time, reflecting the country's political and cultural changes. The white and red stripes represent the two historical provinces of Bohemia and Moravia, which formed the core of the Czech lands. The blue triangle, added in 1920, symbolizes Slovakia, which was briefly part of Czechoslovakia after World War I. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the flag was adopted as the official flag of the newly independent Czech Republic.
